This signals that when AI-related claims mislead consumers, existing legal frameworks can apply
Factual errors, ambiguous assertions, and outdated explanations
From a legal and compliance perspective, there are three main categories to watch. First, factual errors: non-existent features or incorrect conditions stated assertively. Second, ambiguous assertions: claims that are not entirely wrong but generalize what should be conditional. Third, outdated explanations: content the company has already updated, but which persists in AI responses. These differ in nature, so treating them all as 'misrepresentation' is less practical than prioritizing them separately
Prioritization, not total control
The key principle is not to attempt total control over AI descriptions. What is needed is early identification of which issues could pose external risk. Company information, core business descriptions, pricing, terms of service, legal status, and risk factors are areas where gaps become accountability issues, not just impression issues. Other areas may tolerate some summarization variance. The point is to prioritize by impact and fixability, not treat everything equally
The cause may not be missing information
It is also important not to immediately assume the cause is missing content. In practice, information may exist but be scattered, not in FAQ or comparison format, or weakly structured with vague headings or subjects — preventing AI from adequately reflecting it. Actions should therefore include not just adding text, but improving discoverability and structure
